چکیده

It is hypothesized that overland flow from urbanizing and agricultural land uses will enhance stream-groundwater interactions. Near-channel groundwater chemistry and hydraulics were studied during runoff events to test this hypothesis and to increase the understanding of hyporheic processes important to stream chemistry and ecology. Twenty-four piezometers (0.3to 1-meter depth) were installed at two central Pennsylvania sites in active, channel sediments of an alluvial aquifer overlying carbonate bedrock, Measurements were taken in piezometers and the stream for five rainfall events between October 2001 and April 2002. This paper discusses the November 30, 2001 event. Surface water and groundwater samples were analyzed to find chemical parameters appropriate for tracing surface water-groundwater interactions. Regression analyses with '*O indicate that calcium may be an appropriate tracer in this watershed. Water chemistry and head varied significantly with time, depth and location in channel sediments during the event. Field data indicate that runoff can result in increased stream losses and an increase in shallow, subsurface flow downstream. KEY TERMS isotopic tracers, piezometers, stormflow, hyporheic processes, hydraulic conductivity

Effects of Urbanization on Nutrient Biogeochemistry of Aridland Streams

Land-use and land-cover change affect the biogeochemistry of stream ecosystems in numerous ways, both direct and indirect. Changes result from hydrologic modifications, including direct alterations of flow regimes and hydrologic flowpaths and indirect changes in hydrologic patterns via increased impervious cover in contributing areas of watersheds. Direct changes to channel morphology (i.e., re...

Coupled Effects of Natural and Anthropogenic Controls on Seasonal and Spatial Variations of River Water Quality during Baseflow in a Coastal Watershed of Southeast China

Surface water samples of baseflow were collected from 20 headwater sub-watersheds which were classified into three types of watersheds (natural, urban and agricultural) in the flood, dry and transition seasons during three consecutive years (2010-2012) within a coastal watershed of Southeast China. Integrating spatial statistics with multivariate statistical techniques, river water quality vari...

Stream depletion predictions using pumping test data from a heterogeneous stream–aquifer system (a case study from the Great Plains, USA)

This uniquely designed study investigates a fundamental issue—the feasibility of predicting stream depletion rates using linear uniform two-dimensional models. Required input for these models includes the hydraulic parameter estimates of the aquifer and the stream–aquifer interface, which may be obtainable through pumping test data analysis. This study utilizes pumping test data collected near ...

GROUND WATER / SURF ' ACE WATER INTERACTIONS JULY 1 - 3 A m SUMMER SPECIALTY CONFERENCE 2002 2 . 4976 f 9 F

ABSTRACT: Recent theoretical work on stream depletion and water level responses to pumping a well near a stream include the (semi-) analytical solutions by Hunt (1999), Zlotnik and Huang (1999), and Butler et al. (2001). Yet, few field studies assessed the limiting assumptions and physical concepts inherent in the theoretical models. A long-term study of stream depletion under typical condition...

Watershed-Scale Land Use Activities Influence the Physiological Condition of Stream Fish.

Land use changes within watersheds can have large effects on stream ecosystems, but the mechanistic basis of those effects remains poorly understood. While changes to population size presumably reflect underlying variation in organismal health and condition, such individual-level metrics are rarely evaluated in the context of ecosystem disturbance. To address this deficiency, we combined physio...
